Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana or commonly known as KVPY is a Fellowship Program conducted on a National basis by the Department of Science And Technology (DScT), Government of India. It was started in 1999 by the then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It is administered by Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The aim of this National Fellowship program is to inspire the students who have extraordinary talent and a knack in Science subjects to pursue basic science courses and then finally take up Research Career in the field of Science. The Objective of the program when it was first launched in was to encourage the students who are highly talented, motivated and have an aptitude for Science and realize their true academic potential by inspiring them to take up a career in the field of Research which will ultimately enhance the Research and Development of our country which ultimately will strengthen our nation.
To get this fellowship, students have to pass a two tier examination. The first tier of the first stage is the aptitude exam and after which an interview is conducted for the students who qualify the aptitude exam. The final selected students are eligible for the scholarship. The students can give this exam in Class 11th, Class 12th and while studying in the first Year in a Basic Sciences Course. On basis of the level the Students give the paper in, they are classified into three streams. Different Schemes have different eligibility criteria and different examination syllabus and pattern.
The streams are Stream SA, Stream SX, and Stream SB. The students who give the qualifying exam while studying in Class 11th are called Stream SA students, the students who give exam while studying in Class 12th are called Stream SX students and students who give the exam while studying in the First Year are called Stream SB students.
Fellowships are given to the students on the basis of Merit List which is prepared by the conducting body, based 75% on the aptitude exam score and 25% on the interview score. Only those students who clear the cut-off of Aptitude Exam can give the Interview. The Aptitude Exam is Multi Choice based exam which is of 100 Marks. It constitutes of two parts which are 1 and 2, each contains 4 sections of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology. Paper I contains 20 questions whereas Paper II contains 10 questions in each section. In the Stream SA, all questions are compulsory (Science and Mathematics). For stream SB and SX, candidates are allowed to answer any THREE of the four subjects in Part I and any TWO of the four subjects in Part II.
Notice for the invitation of applications and application date along with other important dates is first published in the local dailies in the beginning of July. KVPY Application forms are made available to the students for filling from the second week of July. The applications remain open for generally more than a month and application process is closed in the third week of August.
The application fee is normally accepted till the first or second week of September. Admit Cards for the exam are issued in the month of October. Aptitude Exam is usually conducted on the last or second last Sunday of October, and results for the aptitude exam are declared in the last week of December or the first week of January.
